Apple incorporated emojis in Japanese iOS 2.2, and by late 2011, the company had incorporated them internationally. The first emojis-little pixel caricatures of humans-were created in the late-1990s in Japan, mainly as a way for people to convey thoughts and emotions in text messages. Looking at Apple’s new batch of emojis, Jensen carefully considered the history. Jensen met her two business partners, Rich Bond and Eric Gerzymisch, while working in the film industry. Jensen, a lesbian, is a founder of Whapp!, an Austin, Texas–based app design company. But the updates weren’t diverse enough for Janet Jensen. It featured hundreds of new, diverse emojis-people of color and gays and lesbians, including couples. Last month, Apple released a software update: iOS 8.3.
